Blue Rats
Shhhh! There's Blues here tonight I went to Mag:net to watch a film screening of
Kidlat Tahimik's early work when Snake Charmer guitarist,
Zann, nudged me and said I should stay for the live band for that evening - Blue Rats. I never heard of them and didn't really care much to stay longer. Then he said they play good blues. Did anyone say the Blues? I'd walk a mile to listen to a good blues band - specially here in Manila where blues is more like a niche genre. It doesn't happen everyday and you have to sniff out who the blues bands are and where they play.

The Band
These guys know what they're doing. They even have a fulltime harmonica guy (Joey?...I'm bad with names). A long time favorite they did was Piece of my Heart by Janis Joplin. That song's special. At Burningman, there was this
German girl who belted that song while she was washing my feet! In my wishlist was John Mayall's Room to Move. The harp guy knew it and I talked to the main guy to play it. Nah...didn't happen. No worries though. They played plenty good blues that night. I love it when female singer Mai would dig deep and surge on a few parts and blow away with a raspy voice...yo mama!
Ending Thoughts What a great way to end the night. There's nothing like good blues and this band delivers. It doesn't stop there - for Christmas, they'll be performing with other blues bands at Conspiracy - another blues night aptly entitled Blue Christmas.
