Long Island: Pizza Pasta Dessert Aug 14, 2009

Long Island: Pizza Pasta Dessert
Rating: star star star star star 5 stars (out of 5)
Food Type: Italian - pizza, pasta, chicken
Location: Beside the main library, UP Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines
Tagline: New York Style
Operating Hours: school hours, school days

Kiosk Info
Well, it's not a restaurant, but just a small kiosk offering Italian fair to mostly UP students. A popular item on the menu is the combo meal: pizza + pasta + chicken. If you get lucky, an empty monoblock seat may be available, or if the concrete bench is dry, you can sit down. It's really spartan like most food places in UP are - in short, don't look for ambiance. But come hungry.

    Typical Menu:
  • combo: pizza + pasta + chicken = P90
  • combo: chicken + pasta = P80
  • combo: pizza + pasta = P70
    Nice Touches:
  • owners Gilbert and Daisy are hands-on and they both love food
  • while portions are prepared ahead of time, they cook the pasta in front of you.
  • they serve good empanada and ice cream too!
    Things They Can Improve On:
  • They actually like to improve the place and the surrounding area, like placing decent seats, an awning for the rainy season, but the administration wouldn't allow it.
  • Coffee! They used to offer cappuccino, but when the machine broke down, they stopped selling coffee.

Verdict
(Aug 14, 2009) I could talk about high-zoot places and their award-winning chefs, but what gets my attention is this small campus-secret offering great food at very reasonable prices. I can't single out any dish because all I tried were good, filling, and bang for the buck. The hands-on owners, Gilbert and Daisy, are food lovers who take delight seeing people enjoy what they've prepared. You can taste the love they put into their dishes - which I find true with people who genuinely love to cook. Long Island is one such example. Whenever I'm in UP, I always default to this place. Often enough, I end up having long drawn food-talk with the owners. They know food and we exchange information on great eating places.

"...does this mean wala na ang beach house?" -- Ruben

(Aug 18, 2009) What works for me with Beach House is the alfresco dining (despite the flies). But food or value-wise, I don't see any competitive advantage. If Long Island can add the alfresco feature (like added tables and chairs under the nearby canopy), it's a home run - great food, great value and alfresco! (paging Gilbert!!!)

(Aug 14, 2009) This, plus early evening drinking sessions in sunken garden and the UPM tambayan, are what i miss most about UP
