Into The Black

The Last Straw
My graying started as early as 15 years back...a subtle hint which progressed into a mostly-salt-than-pepper duotone. I tried to live with it with increasing discomfort while at the same time convincing myself I need to gracefully surrender the things of youth. Yeah, right! I could have gone on with it if not for the last straw that broke the camel's back which happened very recently during my 2-month backpacking within the country.

I Love You
A young provincial lass took curiosity of me and after some benign tete-a-tete, I received a picture-text with the message, "I Love You" - an obvious school-girl crush (she was over 18). Humoured but not taking it seriously, I asked her in Tagalog, "Sigurado ka ba? (Are you sure?)". To my horrific chagrin, her reply was a very candid, "Opo (yes sir)". I was aaaaaaaaaarrrrrgh!

Painting It Black
My immediate destination was the pharmacy for some hair color - not prophylactic! But it took me a few weeks to take the giant leap.

Ending Thoughts
Looking at myself in the mirror now, seeing mostly black with a few rogue silvery streaks, I feel more comfortable. It's ironic that the entire time I had this salt-n-pepper look, I felt I had to pretend to be something nature wanted me to be. This is one of those extremely rare occasions I balk at the 'natural order of things'. Analogy? Hmmm....think of something legal but not necessarily just - segregation, harsh punishment for possession of marijuana (no, I don't touch that), etc. But at the end of the day, I have to ask myself, "Am I making a caricature of myself?". Of course!

(Jan 31, 2012) One can play 'dress-up' all they want. It is fun. It makes us feel good. It is the true fountain of youth. Not the cosmetic overhaul mind you, but remembering that you can still do silly things that make you feel good. If you are aware of what you're doing then I doubt you're in much trouble of becoming a caricature. As a friend, I cannot see that even being within the realm of possibility. Now if only I could figure out this practice of fellows wearing pants around their thighs. It is still a mystery to me.
