Beyond Cynicism

Over an intimate dinner, a friend (whose warmth and accommodation I welcome with unguarded affection) explained to me that while I live for the magical moments, she'll go for something more traditional…having somebody to be with on a more or less permanent basis….exactly the same thing I have viewed with (perhaps unfounded) cynicism.

However, coming from somebody who exudes down-to-earth honesty and openness, I was thrown back to an earlier time when things were more innocent….when nomadic mobility in search of a fleeting moment was unheard of…when partners were two sides of the same coin…at least while it lasted. It was heart-warming and nostalgic. It made me regard that scene with renewed freshness…maybe even optimism.

I'm tempted to think we may have been talking about the same thing….mine is just more granular...life broken down in moments instead of a continuing stream.

Along my journey in pursuit of human connection, I'll remain true to my calling, take the less beaten trail on the fork and lose myself to where it takes me...even if it means going back in time...beyond cynicism.
