Kuh Ledesma's ConcertMay 28, 2005 Saturday

The Boyz' at Kuh Ledesma's Concert

I received a text message from friends saying Boogs arrived from Canada and treating for drinks at the Captain's Bar at Mandarin Hotel. Did I hear free drinks? I haven't seen the guy in a while and I'm equally eager to spend time with the other guys. It's no longer like the good old days when you can go drinking with the boyz at the drop of a hat, so this is cool. I didn't think a formal invite was called for - it must be one of those t-par nang bayan (free for all party). What I didn't understand was why Mandarin Hotel? Padi's Point or Gerry's Grill would have been more appropriate.

I met my long-time buddy Ferd at Galleria and after treating ourselves to free Wi-Fi at the Galleria's new wing, we were off to the Mandarin. Now I understand why the Mandarin. Janu, another high school friend, is session guitarist for Kuh's concert that evening. With P1000 admission fee and beer that Boogs had to fork, I felt I gate-crashed his gig. Oh well.

Janu Villanueva
Back in high school, he was an avid blues guitar player. We'd jam and sing the blues away over a couple of beers. Now, he's one of the most sought-after session guitarists. Before the Kuh gig, he was a regular at Zirko. Like our batchmate Tots Tolentino, he's carved a name for himself in the industry.

Kuh Ledesma
Kuh is celebrating her 25th anniversary in the business. I first spoke to her, yes, 25 years ago when she was still an upstart singing for a band at Holiday Inn's El Camarote along Roxas Blvd. Back then, her talent was unmistakeable but a little rough on the edge (she frowned a lot while singing). Now, she has much greater voice control with the grace and elegance of a swan. After all these years, she's still managed to look hot. Indeed, she's done well for herself.

Boyz Club
Janu, Ferd and I later went to North Park for some late night mami (noodle soup). It's been awhile since we had quality time together. Despite the few gray hairs, it was still the same possé. Being with them is like wearing an old shoe - comfortable, unpretentious and completely engaging.
