When a Hero Comes Along

It was raining cats and dogs the night before here in Valencia, Negros Oriental. It poured unrelentingly until shortly before sunrise. The rivers were flooded. Even low bridges were under water. A strong current coming from the mountain run-off pulled everything in its path, leaving destruction in its wake.

I was outside witnessing carnage happen right in front of me. From the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of this hapless soul clinging for dear life, clothes tattered and torn free by raging waters. Risking life and limb, I plunged into the menacing water, tossed around like a rag doll. Gripping solid rock with one hand, I stayed anchored while I extended the other hand to save this innocent soul from the unforgiving current. Finally, at great risk, we pulled ourselves out of harm's way. I was utterly relieved seeing the traumatized victim slowly wade into safer water.
