Subic Bay: Scuba Diving at Vasco's
Vasco's Scuba Dive Resort When I told Bianca I already got my Open Water Diver certificate, her first response was we'll go diving in Subic. Whoa! This would be my first dive out of Apo Island! Through her, I met Gregg Homan who manages Vasco's Scuba Dive Resort - an all-in-one destination that's a restaurant, hotel, museum and dive shop.
Dive Crew Two dives were planned that day - Nat's Reef and Lobster Point. Bianca couldn't join us as she still had to tie-up loose ends with Ocean Adventure prior to her 3-month backpacking. Diving that day was Gregg, Gianne, Natalie, myself and some diver clients, one of whom was on a Discovery dive.
Nat's Reef This reef system was newly discovered by Gregg's divemaster-in-training, Nathalie. She also named the spot after her - Nat's Reef! The visibility was fairly good at a depth of 15 meters. I remember seeing a good number of Nudibranch as Natalie kept pointing to everyone she saw.
Lobster Point We were just talking to Gregg about where we surfed 2 days before. He was stoked and wanted to check the place out...by boat! Upon arriving, we were all surprised to see beneath the water, pristine coral reef that was simply begging to be explored. We came back in the afternoon to explore. We were not disappointed. The reef system had its own relief contour that makes for gullies and slopes. What even more interesting was the abundant presence of spiny lobsters! Lots of lobsters.
Unwinding What's great at Vasco's is you can hang-out at the resto-bar perched on the water overlooking the bay. You get a cool sea breeze as you enjoy the view. There's a huge Captain's table for open conversation with whoever. Cold beer, great food and socials as the sun sets. If you're checked-in in one of the hotel rooms, no need to find your way back home specially after a few coldies. Vasco's was really doing it for me.
