Distributing Relief Goods to Victims of Typhoon Pablo - Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental Jan 1, 2013

Distributing Relief Goods to Victims of Typhoon Pablo - Compostela Valley, Davao Oriental

Typhoon Pablo
The new year kicked-off with a trip from Davao City to Compostela Valley in Davao Oriental to help distribute 100 bags of relief goods to victims of Typhoon Pablo. The tour to neighboring towns of Gabi, Compostela and Nabunturan offered a glmpse of the horror that took place as logs carried by flood waters still remain embedded in rice fields, people continue to live in tents and building structures lay in its skeletal remains.

Raising Funds
The relief effort was initiated by High School Class '70 of the University of Mindanao, and with the help of well-meaning relatives, colleagues and friends in Davao City and Canada, enough money was raised to buy basic necessities - rice, water, noodles, canned goods, used clothing, footwear, etc. These were later on packed individually into 100 bags.

Avoiding the Mob
To prevent a mob-swarming, previous arrangements were made with a trusted local to identify hard-hit families who need help the most. The good were then delivered to a depot for distribution to those named families in the list.

Ending Thoughts
It is uplifting to see the triumph of the human spirit from common people finding in themselves room to spread whatever blessing they can share to those unfortunate who are badly in need of them - strangers raising money from hard-earned income to extend to another stranger. Wow! What a way to start the New Year!
