Balinese culture is steeped in religious rites and rituals which they carry out as part of their day-to-day existence. It's not unusual to have some kind of religious ceremony every week. This mass cremation (Ngaben) however, is special. It only happens once every 3 to 6 years as prescribed by the village council. The body is buried and exhumed for cremation when the date is set. It is participated on by the ordinary locals who come in traditional clothing. Members of the royal family and the high priests are cremated soon after passing on and don't have to wait for the mass cremation date. Ngaben becomes a village-wide festivity with a parade of animal effigies beginning at the Central Market (Pasar Seni) and ending up at the Peliatan Village. Ngaben is a very important and symbolic rite that releases the soul of the dearly departed to its rightful place in the after-life.

Louisa
Throughout this event, Louisa (a yogini I met at The Yoga Barn) and I would be together on our newly purchased sarongs (traditional wear for the event), taking pictures, asking others what's happening, and simply being a part of the festivity. With the heat and the crowd, it was exhausting after a while. She continued while I took a respite back to my hostel.

I guess Ubud's energy took us to different directions after the ceremony. I got pulled into other events and into other people's orbits while she continued climbing the nearby volcano. That was the last time I saw her.
