Meeting Up
Back in Penang (Malaysia), in a crowded eatery, I asked if I could share a table. She said yes and we started having a conversation. I was amazed at her story. She said she was supposed to be in school but it bored her. Instead, she hired someone to attend her classes, pass all the exams and eventually get a diploma - all under her name, of course. Yes, just like in the Bollywood movie, The 3 Idiots! But it didn't end there. She put up a beauty business hiring Korean beauticians to make-over Chinese people in Shenzen. The revenue is what funds her travels. All that at 22 years old! That's how I met Jin - an intrepid soul unbounded by tradition or templates. I was more than impressed. We agreed to meet up again for Penang's durian festival but she couldn't make it. That's the last I saw her.

A Decent Proposal
As we both continued our travels, we kept in touch through social media and discovered promising possibilities that lie on the horizon. At one point she intimated going to the Netherlands to strike a deal that would corner the sugar-waxing market in China. Whoa! What a precocious little girl. She asked how much I would charge for a website for her growing business. I could have scoped the job and gave her a quote. But it didn't resonate with me. It felt awkward. Instead, I made a proposition (call it an un-indecent proposal) - something I rarely do. I proposed that I simply do whatever I can to support her in whatever she does with no money changing hands in return for the same consideration.
An Alliance
Her reaction was unexpected. She was moved that someone, a virtual stranger, would put trust and relationship on the table instead of money. She accepted my proposal and that somehow formed the cornerstone of a deepening friendship - an unintended alliance.
Davao Eats
Salivating from my pictures in Davao where I get my daily durian fix and slabs of grilled tuna, I invited her to come visit. From Portugal, she made the flight to Davao. Her arrival in Davao heralds a new chapter for me. I meet magnificent lives around the bend and I am now with one. I am eagerly anticipating how life unfolds.
