Out with the Old, In with the New
With friends from the Cebu of 'old' being nowhere, I shifted my headspace into a new and different peoplescape.

Mikko

Michael PatoMikko Pato Philippines
Hostel Seven Cebu Hostel Seven Cebu
Everything about this hotel is Mikko's brainchild. I had a good connection with him last time and it's good to see him in his radiance again. At 32, he's all over the place - managing his Hostel 7, engaging the hostel guests, overseeing a bar project in Moalboal, maintaining another Hostel 7 in Badian, lining up another hotel on Tops and training for a marathon in Singapore. While others are stuck in the nuts-and-bolts, Mikko makes things happen with his broad brush strokes. This guy is doing in a short span what would take others a lifetime. He works hard, trains hard, lives hard and plays hard. While half my age, he takes me to school.

I met his friends and I could just imagine that a few years down the road, these people would be the movers and shakers of Cebu and perhaps beyond. They're upwardly mobile, forward-thinking and kinetic for the most part. You can tell a lot about a person by the friends he keeps.

Initially, Cebu's energy on this visit was down for me - he was the only exception to that. If not for him, I would have left Cebu much earlier. But he kept things engaging for me until Cebu took traction again. Now, it feels like a new vibrant Cebu, full of promise and opportunities.

Mikko Moments

  1. Grab delivery - we were all gathered at the hostel bar, some awaiting their Grab food delivery...Mikko included. When the Grab driver came, everyone got their food and Mikko got his 1-liter Johnny Walker Black
  2. Chinese dinner - with Franzi, Mikko suggested we all go have some Chinese dimsum. He took us on his SUV to a popular Chinese resto, and did all the ordering. It's wasn't a cheap place, but good that I had some money with me. When the bill came, it was all settled...by him. What a guy! He's has shown time and time again how generous he is - I've heard stories from the hotel guests.

Mikko Quotes

  1. "The isaw barbeque (chicken intestine) at the bar is cleaned inside-out, so there's no paté"
  2. After hearing him talk about the exploits of a wealthy and highly successful Cebu realtor, I asked him if this realtor is Cebu's equivalent to Donald Trump (as a real estate tycoon, and not as a politician). His reply, "Oh...there are many Donald Trumps in Cebu."
  3. After being introduced to the vice-mayor who stopped by his hostel over Christmas eve, and seeing a high-zoot Porshe Boxster convertible in the parking area, I remarked that Vice had a good taste in cars. He replied, "That's my Dad's."

Jeanne

Jeanne TorrefrancaJeanne Philippines
Yoga Teacher
Jeanne is a special friend to me. I chose to have Cebu as my port of landing largely to hang out with her. But after a short catch-up, she was no longer available. It's hard to conceal my disappointment. But it's not just her. Nearly all my friends and acquaintances have either left Cebu, unavailable or just too busy. Cebu felt like an alien place. The energy was flat. If not for Mikko's energy and generosity, I would have left the city sooner.

Alyssha

Alyssha AlemanAlyssha Philippines
I've known Alyssha from my Camotes Island days back in March 2017. We've kept touch loosely through the years. It's a good thing she's already based in Cebu during my stay. Finally, she was able to stop by Hostel 7 Cebu to join me for coffee. It was just great catching up with her and seeing the many changes...being married, leaving Camotes, pursuing a career, etc. I'm sure our paths will cross again.

Even though Lovorn and I were never close friends, he always played a role in my Cebu stay even though it was limited to my participation to the Theosophical Society gatherings only. He is amiable, smart, humorous and like Mikko, he plays the role of nexus - the central hub for a community gathering.

Marky was my curve ball in Cebu. I met him before, but it wasn't anything more than a passing hello-goodbye. But when it was just the 2 of us at a Theosophical Society meeting, we had a chance to talk. From my initial impression of him and of what others say about him, I see him as someone who is low-key, but knowledgable in his expertise, reliable, and gets things done. That's the kind of people I want to associate with. With many projects racing inside my head, he comes to mind as a go-to person.

Arthur and Rebecca

ArthurArthur Philippines

RebeccaRebecca Philippines
Arthur is a pleasant surprise. We've never been close friends or hung out back in the day. But we remained acquainted after meeting at a Vipassana Meditation course at the University of San Carlos back in 2012. Upon arrival here in Cebu, I sent all friends a kind of 'Hello'. Some didn't bother to return the message, some said Hi back but Arthur even invited me to join him and his friend, Rebecca, for coffee. That was fun. Subsequently, he invited me again this time with Rebecca and a couple, Michael and Sheena. We all went for a seaside dinner at Lantao in Cordova and went to Il Corso for a leisurely walk on the promenade. That was a pleasant evening. Great meeting awesome people as well. Rebecca grows on you. I like her. She's fun and bubbly.

Elizabeth

ElizabethElizabeth Netherlands
The last hurrah came as a curve ball when my dear friend from Chiang Mai, Elizabeth, decided to come to the Philippines to get her PADI Open Water certification. Of course, I invited her to my hotel and do some traveling together. We spent lots of time together, over tuna sashimi, beer, with Sepfry (of Dawata), tuba (fermented coconut sap), walks to Ayala, etc. More importantly, she gave me the nudge to commit myself to being an online yoga teacher. This is a big step...something that I've put off for a long time already. But in Kris' parlance, "...that would lead you to your highest levels of self-realisation".

Her arrival marked a turning point - leaving Cebu. With Mikko out of the country and me finding my bearing (and feeling a little restless), it became clear to me to pack up and venture out in search of a land that resonates...a land where I can grow roots (just in case Coron doesn't work out).

Ending Thoughts
Even though I never left the hostel in the 45 days I stayed there, it felt like a life of travel as I lived vicariously through the tales of the passing backpackers, some of whom became friends with.

Grateful that of the many 'former' friends I had from back in the day, a few made the effort to spend time and catch up with me.

More on Cebu City:

About Cebu City
  • Cebu City is the 2nd biggest city in the Philippine (next to Manila) - and it continues to build and expand. Traffic is getting bad. Decentralization is being developed with the SM Super Mall in the SRP south and the suburban towns in the north.
  • Boat from the airport to the city center - even without traffic, it takes about 4 rides to reach the city. But with Cebu's increasing traffic congestion, it has become a nightmare. Instead of taking the land route, take the water route - no traffic, fresher air and cheaper. From the airport, take the yellow multi-cab straight to the river port and take the ferry (there's only one destination) to the city. Take the 02B jeep and get off at UC near Jones - you're now on the city's main artery.
  • given its size and increasing congestion, Cebu really needs a mass railway system - something that is conspicuously lacking, but no one seems to complain about
  • Cebu is bursting at the seams on the yoga scene. There are about 20 yoga centers in the city - from yoga studios to gyms offering yoga and hotels jumping on the bandwagon
  • a trendy and safe place in Cebu where you can chillout for coffee and enjoy good eats would be at the Ayala Mall
  • there are other pocket-areas for trendy hangouts - Banila Town Center, Crossroads, Escario Plaza, La Vie, etc.
  • the tourist area where most of the budget hotels and restaurants are, are located within the Mango area, although it has a seedy belly feel. Kids may swarm on you pretending to be begging, but they could be picking your pocket or your backpack pockets - be careful
  • many pick-pockets in the Colon area - be careful

Cebu City to Siquijor by Bus, via Liloan (Santander) (as of Jan 2023)

Sugbo Urban
There is only one bus plying this route - Sugbo Urban. Tourist class coach, a/c, comfortable, Sun-Fri (these dates keep changing). P420 for bus, P275 for ferry to Liloan. Leaves Cebu City (South Bus Terminal) at 8 pm (Sundays 1 am), heads south to Liloan (Santander), takes the ferry to Larena Port, Siquijor, docks around 5 am, makes a clockwise roundtrip around Siquijor Island - Larena, Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi (stops at Lazi market for breakfast and leaves 6:50 am), San Juan, Siquijor (arrives 8am, P50 from Lazi to Siquijor Poblacion) and catches the 1pm ferry at Larena Port for Liloan, Cebu and resumes its land route. Arrives Cebu City 10 pm.

Sugbo Urban is the cheapest and most convenient way because when it reaches Larena Port (Siquijor), it continues its trip around the island (clockwise) along the circumferential road, passing through - Enrique Villanueva, Maria, Lazi, San Juan, Siquijor...and back to Larena. It spares you the cost of hiring a tricycle or habal-habal which charges exhorbitant fares. Besides, it's a long trip to the other side of the island to be taking by tricycle.
