An Art Show with Chai and Mar
I was invited by Chai to join her and Mar for the Bangkok Art Book Fair 2018 at the Bangkok City Gallery. I wasn't sure what the event was all about but it was a welcoming change of scenery. Like most art shows I'd been to, I imagined it to be a highly interactive event with flowing wine and hors d'oeuvres.

Bangkok Art Book Fair 2018
The Bangkok Art Book Fair 2018 is an annual gathering of young people (with better English) who make up the art scene in Bangkok - indie artists, photographers, writers, graphic designers, illustrators as well as indie publishers, small publishing houses and contemporary art collectives from Thailand and abroad. They are on their second year, and this time it's bigger with more people crowding-in. It's in one big open space perhaps the size of a basketball court with tables lined-up with artists, curators and art products. I saw hand-made postcards, finely crafted books, posters, poetry and books. Many activities were happening - book launch, talks, panel discussion, etc. The energy was vibrant and interactive.

The Book Maker
I already lost Chai and Mar as I drifted into the art scene. I stopped-by one table and talked to a pleasant lady artist about her work. She accepts poetry from artists and puts it in a hand-made book. She showed me a few of her work. The books were simple but meticulously crafted - a perfect one-of-a-kind to have your poetry into.

She also showed me her own book with her own content. To be honest, I didn't understand the content which had a few scribblings and brush strokes. Curious, I asked probing questions.

At that point, I knew I was out of my depth. It was a humbling paradigm shift. I loved it!

Ending Thoughts
Not only was there no wine or canapes but there was even an admission fee! Ha-ha, so much for expectations. But it was all good. I got more than what I bargained for - a whole new appreciation into Bangkok's art scene (which is different from the ones I'd been to in Manila and Cebu), great bonding with Chai and Mar and mundanely, being out of my hostel away from the clutches of my laptop.

  1. take the MRT train to Bang Sue Station. Take the #1 Exit to the north provincial trains
  2. Proceed to Counter 2. You will see an information booth, a train schedule chart and the ticket counter. Choose the train and pay at the ticket counter.
  3. daily train schedule:
